SDRC Selected to Develop Directional Antenna Networking Modeling and Simulation Tool

SAN DIEGO, California (12/18/2006) - SDRC (San Diego Research Center, Inc.), a leader in wireless network research and system development in the defense sector, has been awarded a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase II contract to develop, validate and demonstrate a software tool enabling design optimization of directional communications systems that rely on focused antenna beams.

During the Phase I effort, SDRC investigated the feasibility of a versatile and high-fidelity modeling and simulation tool for directional antenna based wireless communication systems. The initial development of the proposed tool, Advanced Directional Antennas and Protocols Modeling and Simulation Tool (ADAPT), has demonstrated the capability of enabling extensive comparative study of a wide variety of design considerations of directional communications over a broad spectrum range above 2 GHz.

During Phase II, SDRC will develop the software for completing ADAPT.  Key components of this development include, 1) creating an array of new and detailed simulation building blocks for various types of emerging directional antennas and associated protocols; 2) developing optimized capabilities to compute upper bounds on the performance for given scenarios based on global state knowledge; 3) developing novel capabilities to automatically combine antenna and protocol building blocks using innovative cross-layer optimization techniques, and 4) reducing the development time for a new directional antenna based system by creating a visualization module.

This Phase 2 SBIR program, "Versatile Modeling and Simulation Tool for Directional Networked Communications," is funded at $726,575.

About the SBIR program: The Department of Defense (DoD) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and  Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs fund a billion dollars each year in early-stage R&D projects at small technology companies - projects that serve a DoD need and have commercial applications. SBIR and STTR funds are awarded competitively and small companies retain the intellectual property rights to technologies they develop under these programs.

About SDRC: SDRC is a wireless technology research and system development company focusing on challenging and important opportunities in government and commercial communications markets.
